TWO MASTERS

Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or he will be devoted to one and despise the other” (Matthew 6:24). Master is defined as a person who possesses authority, ownership, or instructional leadership. Therefore, our master is either Jesus Christ, or it is the world ruled by the Deceiver who lures people into trusting in what is seen and always searching for satisfaction, comfort, and ease.

Jesus urges us to store our treasure (our deepest value and allegiance) in heaven where it will last forever. If not, we will always follow what captivates the heart and the flesh. So, the question remains: Does Christ and the things of God capture our heart or does the heart seek after worldly things that draw focus away from God and His Word?

It is necessary to take inventory of thoughts that occupy our minds throughout each day, because what we think is the basis for our actions, motives, emotions, character, faith, and what we trust. We are instructed to "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5) When a negative, fearful, or ungodly thought or desire enters our mind, we must pause, examine it, and ask ourselves if it aligns with the truth of the Gospel. However, if we don’t read God’s Word, how can we know truth to make godly decisions?

Jesus told us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by renewing our mind with His Word. Only then, can we discern God’s will and what is good, acceptable, and perfect (Romans 12:2). That renewing with God’s Word encourages us to set our thoughts on things above and not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2). For earthly things tempt, deceive and manipulate us to do and think what is contrary to God, His Word, and His will.

You may ask, “How do I renew my mind?” The simple answer is to transform our thinking with God’s Word by studying and meditating on His Word which is all truth. Then we focus on that truth and submit our will to God’s will.

Jesus warned, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, (that which has the greatest value to you), there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).

One day, all will stand before Christ to give an account of our thoughts, behavior, actions and every hidden thing (Romans 14:12; Ecclesiastes 12:14). As we give a personal account to God for our life, our choices, and our words, will God see intentional living for Him or will He see a person who did things their way and ignored God’s call to live intentional, obedient, godly lives for Him?

Psalm 119:11 tells us that our treasure is truth which is found in God’s Word. The Psalmist said, “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11).

It is difficult to sin when we know truth. Once the heart comprehends the value and treasure found in God’s Word, nothing nor any temptation can rule the soul, for God is faithful. He will not let those submitted to the will and purposes of Christ to be tempted beyond what they can bear. For He will provide a way to endure it (I Corinthians 10:13).

We must check our spirit to see what temptations lure us away from obeying God. It could be wealth, lust for forbidden things, addictions, pleasures of the flesh, lying, deception, and anything that opposes the Word of God. For it is impossible to give one’s ultimate loyalty to two conflicting forces—two opposing masters. Eventually one will be favored over the other.

God’s Word has the power to transform us. Once the heart comprehends that truth, nothing else can rule the soul. When His Word captures our heart, then freedom and joy take residence as it molds our heart towards God.

God’s Word is a treasure and an eternal source of wisdom, comfort, and truth that outlasts any earthly wealth. It is an invaluable resource for navigating life, offering unfailing promises and deep communion with the Creator.

The only way to remain in Christ is to meditate on the scriptures daily so that His truth shapes our thoughts and decisions. "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV).

We maintain our prayer life by casting our anxieties on Him and relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us each day. We acknowledge our daily need for Jesus, knowing that faith comes by hearing the Word, reading the Word, praying God’s Word, and worshipping God.

PRAYER: FATHER, You are faithful and true to Your Word. Place within my heart a desire to read and understand Your Word so that Your Spirit and Word have all power to guide my life. Help me each day to be faithful in choosing You and not the things of this world that can easily distract from seeking and serving You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
